Bernard Petiot

After discovering artistic gymnastics as a child, Bernard followed his passion all the way to the Canadian university circuit. While in this circuit, Bernard was awarded numerous titles including “Athlete of the Year" from Quebec City’s Université Laval ;in 1975.

Then, along with one of his professors, he founded Club Salto, where he created and coached the women’s gymnastics program for eight years.

Upon completing his Master’s degree, Bernard was recruited by Montreal’s Club Gymnix to take the reins of their advanced gymnastics program while simultaneously teaching at Université de Montréal.

In 1997, he created an advanced training program for coaches at the Centre National Multisport Montréal as part of the National Coaching Certification Program. Bernard’s career as a coach was prolific: in addition to taking part in 13 World Championships, he trained four Olympic athletes; more than any other coach in the province of Québec.

In 1998, Cirque du Soleil recruited Bernard to manage their training studios and staff, to direct their acrobat training programs and to supervise their team of coaches and performance medicine staff. Bernard has now been with Cirque du Soleil for 15 years and is currently their Vice President of Casting and Performance.

Ariane Ollier-Malaterre, PhD, is a Professor of management at Université du Québec A Montreal (UQAM). She graduated from Sciences Po Paris summa cum laude and has a 10-year professional experience as management consultant with Accenture, project leader at Sciences Po Paris, and entrepreneur. She earned a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Management from ESSEC Business School and CNAM University, France, in 2007, and was a post-doctoral fellow with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College.

Ariane’s research focuses on work-life dynamics at the individual level (e.g. work-life conflict and enrichment, boundary management between professional and personal identities on social media such as Facebook), the organizational level (e.g. workplace flexibility and employee engagement) and the country level (e.g. cross-national comparisons). Her work was published in top-tier journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Human Relations and the Journal of Vocational Behavior.

Ariane’s research was featured in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times and Le Monde, and she has been named ‘Professor of the week’ by the Financial Times. She gave a Master Class for the European Commission on workplace flexibility and was also auditioned by French Prime Minister’s Strategic Analysis Center. Ariane consults for businesses regarding the implementation of flexible working and related work-life programs and how to adapt these initiatives to different country contexts.

Prior to UQAM, Ariane has taught at McGill, Boston College, Sciences Po and Rouen Business School. She teaches Leadership, Human Resources, Organizational Behaviour and Cross-Cultural Management from the undergraduate level to executive education. She has created courses on ‘Career, Work and Life Integration’ for HR professionals and MBAs.

Robert Cousin
