Sunil Johal, Policy Director
Mowat Center – an independent public policy think tank located at the School of Public Policy & Governance at the University of Toronto and Ontario’s non-partisan, evidence-based voice on public policy
This session will explore the trends shaping Canada’s labour market and economy of the future, including automation, the rise of the gig economy and the increased prevalence of precarious work. What options do Canadian governments and firms have to prepare for the new era of work?
“A new Mowat report says that Canada should consider radical changes to its social safety net as the country faces losing a projected 7.5 million jobs to automation.” http://www.huffingtonpost.ca
|9:30am – 10:15am||THE POWER OF REMOTE TEAMS: EXPONENTIAL ORGANIZING STRATEGIES FOR THE NEW WORLD OF WORK (E)
Steve Rio, Founder
BriteWeb – a digital and branding agency for the social sector that works with non-profits, foundations and social ventures making positive impact
Briteweb has never subscribed to the traditional notion of how an agency should operate. Our remote work policy is three sentences long, and ends with: “Enjoy Bora Bora.”
Having a flexible, human-centric, values-based approach is empowering Briteweb to change what it means to be part of a company. We’re building a community with no strings attached, an opt-in model driven by a massive transformative purpose and a set of organizing principles and technologies designed for the 21st century.
In late 2016, we launched the Briteweb Network, a distributed community of freelancers based all over the world. To make the ‘hub and spoke’ model work, and enable exponential growth, we’re reverse engineering the HR process. We’ve employed automation, social media, online training and the power of the crowd to scale our Network community to over 50 people in 6 months.
Steve’s talk is designed for business owners, directors and managers who are seeking to understand and adopt remote or distributed team models in their business. Steve will be talking about the culture, organizational strategies and the technology, automation and tactics Briteweb has used to successfully grow a company with two corporate offices, clients all over North America and team members all over the world. This will not be a fluffy talk full of pull quotes from books and articles, Steve will be speaking from direct experience. You will walk away with ideas and strategies that you can deploy in your business immediately.
